Natural Home Remedies For Back Pain:

Back pain is pain felt in the back that usually originates from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine. However, internal structures such as the gallbladder and pancreas may also refer pain to the back. Most back pain is felt in the lower back. The remainder of this article considers back pain in all regions. The onset of back pain may be acute or chronic. It can be constant or intermittent, stay in one place or radiate to other areas.

What you can do

  • Ice first, heat later. As a pain reliever, ice works great. It temporarily blocks pain signals and helps reduce swelling. Several times a day, lay an ice pack wrapped in a towel on the painful area for up to 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can use a bag of frozen peas or corn. During the first few days of home treatment, apply the ice pack as frequently as necessary. Later you may still want to use ice after exercise or physical activities. After about 48 hours, switch to moist heat to stimulate blood flow and reduce painful spasms. Dip a towel in very warm water, wring it out, then flatten and fold it. Lie on your stomach with pillows under your hips and ankles. Place the towel across the painful area, cover the towel with plastic wrap, then put a heating pad-set on medium-atop the plastic. Leave it on for up to 20 minutes. You can repeat this three or four times a day for several days.
  • Perfect your posture. Look for the posture that places the least stress on your back. To do it, stand straight with your weight evenly balanced on both feet. Tilt your pelvis forward, then back, exaggerating the movement. Then settle into the position that feels most comfortable. Now “work your way up” your back, focusing on one area at a time. First concentrate on the area near your waist, then your chest area, and finally your neck and shoulders. Try to feel which position is least stressful and most comfortable. This is the position to maintain when you’re standing, walking, and beginning or ending any exercise.
  • Rise and shine. Each morning before you get out of bed, lie on your back and slowly stretch your arms overhead. Gently pull your knees to your chest, one at a time. To rise, roll to the edge of your bed, turn on your side, put your knees over the edge, and use one arm to push yourself up as you let your feet swing to the floor. Once you’re on your feet, put your hands on your buttocks and lean back very slowly to stretch out your spine.
  • Rub in some relief. Ask a partner to massage the aching area. If you want to use a “back rub” cream or ointment, go ahead, but use caution, as most topical creams produce skin irritation after a few applications. For a simple back-massage aid, stuff several tennis balls into a long sock, tie the end of the sock, and have your partner roll it over your back.

Here are the top 7 home remedies

1. Ginger

Ginger root, which is used to cure vomiting, can also be used in the treatment of back pain. The anti-inflammatory compounds in ginger can give you relief from a backache.

  • Apply some ginger paste on the affected area, followed by eucalyptus oil.
  • Cut 4 to 6 thin slices of fresh ginger root and put them in one and one-half cups of water. Simmer and boil it on low heat for 10 to 15 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature and strain it. Add honey and then drink it. You can drink this ginger tea two or three times a day for a few days or until you see improvement.
  • You can also make an herbal tea with one-half teaspoon of black pepper corns, one-half teaspoon of cloves and one teaspoon of ginger powder.

2. Herbal Oil

Massaging your back with an herbal oil can help your muscles relax and relieve pain. You can use any herbal oil such as eucalyptus oil, almond oil, olive oil or coconut oil. Heat the oil until warm and massage it gently over the aching area.

3. Ice Packs

Cold compresses made with ice are effective in reducing pain and swelling. If ice is not available, you can also use a bag of frozen vegetables.

  1. Put a bowl of crushed ice in a plastic bag and wrap it in a towel. Put the compress on the affected area for 10 to 15 minutes.
  2. Do this repeatedly, waiting half an hour between each application.

You can also apply hot compresses to reduce backache.

4. Chamomile Tea

A hot cup of chamomile tea will help relax tense muscle tissues that can be the cause or a related symptom of a backache. You can buy pre-packaged chamomile tea or make your own.

  1. Add one tablespoon of chamomile flowers to one cup of boiling water and let it steep for 10 minutes.
  2. Drink one to three cups daily.

5. Basil Leaves

Basil leaves can also come to your rescue when suffering from a backache.

  1. Add 8 to 10 basil leaves to one cup of water and boil it until the water evaporates to half.
  2. Let it cool to room temperature and then add a pinch of salt.
  3. For mild pain, drink this concoction once daily; for severe pain, drink it twice daily.

6. Poppy Seeds

Poppy seeds work wonders as remedy of backache.

  1. Grind together 1 cup each of poppy seeds (khus khus) and rock candy (misri).
  2. Consume two teaspoons of this mixture twice daily, followed by a glass of milk.

7. Epsom Salt

Epsom salt can ease pain and relieve inflammation.

  • Mix Epsom salt with hot water to make a thick paste. Soak a towel in it and ring out any excess liquid from the towel. Put it on your back near and around the aching area. The heat from the towel will also reduce anyswelling.
  • You can also add two cups of Epsom salt to your bathwater and soak your body in it for half an hour.
