ABOUT MAUSI MAA TEMPLE:

Mausi Maa Temple also known as Rameshwar is a very old temple in Bhubaneswar. The deity in this temple is temple is considered to the be the aunt  and known as the Mausi Maa temple of Lingaraj Temple.

It is located 2km from the Lingaraj shrine. Legend goes as when Rama was returning from Lanka after victory over Ravana,Goddess Sita asked to worship Shiva here.So Ramachandra built a Linga for that purpose.

Traditionally during Ashokashtami,which falls one day before to Rama Navami in Chaitra Lord Lingaraja comes to this temple by a large chariot called Rukuna Rath and stays for four days.

Historically the temple dates back to 9th century. It is a living temple, enshrines a Sivalinga within a circular yonipath of 1.25 diameters and 0.35 mtrs in height made of chlorite.

There is also an image of the Durga that is worshipped within the sanctum. Historians say that the temple was built during the late Soma Vansh period that can be traced to the early part of the 12th century AD. The Jagamohan (assembly hall) of the temple was built much later.

According to legends, when Lord Ram was returning from Lanka after victory over Ravana, goddess Sita asked to worship Shiva at the site of the temple. Seeing her devotion, Ram built a lingam at the site for the purpose of her worship.

The temple stands amidst a beautiful park and within its precincts, lies a lily pond.

The architectural features assign the temple to the early part of the 12th century A.D. The temple resembles with Sidhesvara temple of the Muktesvara precinct in Bhubaneswar on architectural ground.

ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES:

The temple is decorated with architectural motifs like pidhamundi, khakharamundis and angasikharas and vajramundis; sculptures like udyotasimha, gajakranta, beki-bhairava are found on the gandi.

PLAN OF THE TEMPLE:

The vimana is pancharatha on plan and Panchanga bada in elevation.

Rekha vimana of mature phase of temple architecture with the addition of jagamohana in the latter period.

Ashlar dry masonry and Sand stone has been used for building the temple.
